Outline
Oral pathology is moving beyond the microscope. Following a brief introduction to the modern workflow in virtual microscopy, this course will examine various pathologic conditions associated with oral ulcerations. Case-based examples will be used to highlight clues from the patient history, clinical findings and symptoms that contribute to an accurate diagnosis. Treatment options will also be presented. Next, oral precancerous and cancerous lesions will be examined, with emphasis on high-risk settings and physical characteristics that can be used to help distinguish worrisome lesions from other conditions. To close, the new (2026) ADA guidelines for the use of adjuncts in the detection of early oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders will be discussed in an interactive format.

Learning objectives:
  • Understand the advantages of virtual microscopy in pathology, from biopsy processing to case review, reporting and consultation
  • Understand the clinical features of traumatic ulcers, including settings that contribute to their development
  • Review immunologic ulcerative conditions from canker sores to erosive lichen planus to mucous membrane pemphigoid and understand treatment strategies
  • To review current concepts of oral cancer and potentially malignant lesions, including the epidemiology and high-risk clinical features
  • To review the updated ADA guidelines for the use of adjuncts in the detection of oral cancer and precancerous lesions
