Outline
Tooth extraction initiates a dynamic wound-healing process that influences both soft tissue healing and alveolar bone remodeling. An understanding of these biological changes is essential for dental care providers who routinely manage extraction sites and plan for future restorative treatment. This presentation will review the fundamentals of extraction socket wound healing and discuss how these processes relate to post-extraction ridge changes. The principles and clinical rationale of alveolar ridge preservation will be presented, with emphasis on when intervention may be beneficial and how treatment decisions can affect long-term outcomes. Practical considerations for the use of bone graft materials, biologics, and barrier techniques in ridge preservation will be discussed in an evidence-based manner. Current literature will be integrated with clinical cases to illustrate clinically relevant strategies that support wound healing, preserve ridge dimensions, and maintain future treatment options in daily practice.
