"Inclusive Excellence: Practical Steps for Oral Healthcare Professionals"

Presented by Dr. Akil Houston, Ph.D., Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion & Chief Diversity Officer

The presentation will spotlight:
  1. Wellness of the profession.
  2. What we are learning / teaching about inclusivity in dental school education (cultural competence and communication are addressed here).
  3. Practical tips for an inclusive practice (data-informed best practices).


Dr. Akil Houston joined the Ohio State University June 2023 as the Chief Diversity Officer and Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  His education includes a B.A. degree in mass media arts from Clark Atlanta University.  He continued his education at Ohio University where he received an M.A. degree in international affairs; an MFA degree in film; and a Ph.D. in cultural studies.  Dr. Houston served as an associate professor of Cultural and Media Studies in the Department of African American Studies at Ohio University.
In his role as the Ohio State University's Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Houston works to advance the college's values, vision, and mission related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; partners with the Offices of Human Resources and Academic Affairs to advance the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce; and continues to promote an inclusive, equitable work environment throughout the college.
