Orofacial Pain is the 12th ADA-Recognized Dental Specialty. Orofacial Pain (OFP) is the diagnosis, management and treatment of pain and dysfunction, disorders of the jaw, mouth, face and associated regions. OFP disorders include musculoskeletal disorders, neuropathic and neurovascular pain disorders, headache and sleep disorders.
Dr. Austin was the first graduate of the Rutgers University Orofacial Pain/TMD Fellowship and Master's program. In 1991, Dr. Austin was appointed a faculty member of the Ohio State University Department of Neurology Headache Clinic and was Assistant Director until 1998. During his tenure at the OSU Department of Neurology Headache Clinic, Dr. Austin was a "Featured Speaker" for the OSU Medical Center "Health for Life" series and the Ohio Medical Education Network (OMEN). OMEN provided medical continuing education to hospitals and physicians in 34 states. In 2000, Dr. Austin was appointed to the National Council of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He has held faculty teaching positions at 5 different universities and has spent the last 14 years teaching Pain and Sleep Disorders to medical students at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Austin has 6 patents in the field of OFP/TMD and Sleep Disorders. These patents are focused on prevention, diagnosis and management. Dr. Austin is rated by Medicare as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which was a central core of his specialty training along with Pain Management and Sleep Medicine.
Presentation overview: Dr. Austin will discuss OFP/TMD and Sleep Disorders and excerpts from his four chapters published in textbooks,
Dental Clinics of North America and
Sleep Medicine Clinics. A 5-minute diagnostic and management screening exam, tests of provocation, diet/stress and pain diaries along with a myriad of treatment "pearls" will be presented. The intended purpose of this 2-hour lecture is to increase the participant's familiarity and recognition of OFP, Sleep and Temporomandibular Disorders.
